Politics can be very messy. What is crucial to political success is to stand against the political opposition in solidarity; that is why political parties do their best to stick to their ideological platform. Too much diversity of opinion within one political party can ruin a party’s chance of being a elected because the vote could be split along factions within a party; thereby causing the common adversary of the factions to win the election. To promote political solidarity, Democrats gather to vote on the platform to which they will stick. The Democratic Committee is responsible for the maintenance of the party’s platform.

The Democratic committee is the organization that is responsible for understanding the trends in the core beliefs of the democratic party. They gather statistics and conduct surveys among registered Democrats to determine what kind of political issues that all factions of the Democratic party have in common. The Democratic Committee refers to the adherents all of the party’s core beliefs as the Democratic party’s base. The Democratic Committee then creates political strategies to appeal to the Democratic base without alienating them for being to different from their beliefs and issues of concern. In difficult political times, the ability to understand the Democratic party’s core believe is sometimes more difficult than in less problematic times. Breakdown in political solidarity can occur when the Democratic Committee miscalculates the dance between appealing to centrist swing voters and the democratic base. Another of the Democratic Committee’s many duties is the prevent the formation of factional rivalries within the Democratic Party. The Race between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama before the Democratic National Convention in 2008 was potentially damaging to the Democratic effort because it had the potential to divide the party. Luckily both candidates were politically intelligent enough to forge a deal in which Barack Obama offered Hillary Clinton the position of Secretary of State in his cabinet if he won the election. This move increased party solidarity and gave the president much needed foreign policy credentials to strengthen his campaign against John McCain and Sarah Palin. The Democratic Committee most likely approved of Obama’s political move. It proved itself critical to Obama’s eventual victory.

In times of extreme political turmoil amongst Democrats, the Democratic Committee will call an emergency convention to do some political soul searching and resolve differences amongst members of the same party. Emergency conventions are rare; most of the time, conventions are called to choose who is the best candidate for president in presidential election year. The venue of these conventions changes every four years with the last occurring in Denver, Colorado in 2008. Political solidarity is critical to all political victories and political committees are critical mechanism of ensuring the preservation of a united political front.
